German online ID function now usable in European eGovernment

MIL OSI Translation. Region: Germany / Germany –

Today, the EU-wide recognition obligation applies to the online ID function of the ID card and the electronic residence permit. The role must now be recognized across Europe by applications from public sector bodies that require electronic identification at "substantial" or "high" levels of trust. This makes Germany the first EU Member State whose identification tool, which has been notified in accordance with the eIDAS Regulation, can be used for administrative services provided by European Member States. Businesses in other EU countries can also recognize the electronic proof of identity on a voluntary basis. Arne Schönbohm, President of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), explains: "Integrating secure authentication methods into digital services is an important step in preventing cyber attacks for example on password databases. With the online ID function, all owners throughout Europe now have access to a tool that enables simple and secure Internet identification through 2-factor authentication. The notification of the online ID function allows owners of identity cards and residence permits to use electronic services throughout Europe safely. "As part of the notification required for recognition, the German eID system was assessed by technical experts from almost all EU Member States. The Member States unanimously concluded that the eID function fulfilled all requirements of the eIDAS Regulation for the level of confidence "high". To enable other Member States to identify themselves with the online ID function, the BSI provides an eIDAS middleware. It will be integrated into the respective national systems. From September 2019 at the latest, the citizens of Estonia, Italy, Croatia, Luxembourg and Spain will be able to use their national identification solutions in other European countries, of course also in Germany. Further EU countries are currently preparing the notification of their eID solutions in accordance with the eIDAS Regulation.
