For much of Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden, the New York Knicks appeared outmatched. The San Antonio Spurs controlled the game, led by Victor Wembanyama, and by late in the second quarter New York trailed by 29 points. The deficit left the arena and fans stunned, and it seemed the Spurs might tie the NBA Finals.
The Knicks, however, mounted a dramatic comeback. New York rallied in the third quarter as their defense improved, turnovers increased, and they began winning loose balls and rebounds. The crowd’s energy shifted, amplifying each stop and score and helping sustain the momentum. The comeback culminated in a 107-106 victory in Game 4, giving the Knicks a 3-1 series lead and bringing them within one win of their first NBA championship since 1973.
Several elements defined the turnaround. Jalen Brunson steadied the team, maintaining composure, controlling tempo, attacking favorable matchups and making key plays down the stretch. OG Anunoby provided the decisive play in the final seconds when his tip secured the winning basket, prompting an immediate, loud reaction in the arena.
The game also highlighted Madison Square Garden’s atmosphere, with a packed crowd and courtside celebrities reacting visibly as the comeback unfolded. Former Knicks and other notable figures watched as the late-game shift turned disbelief into celebration.
While the victory gives New York a substantial advantage, the series is not over. San Antonio remains a threat, with Wembanyama among the league’s most talented players and the Spurs capable of responding. Game 5 will determine whether the Knicks can close the series.
