Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko officially submitted her resignation on Tuesday, which was approved by Parliament, as part of a government reshuffle ordered by President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Announced on Sunday as part of a “shift in political strategy,” the cabinet overhaul is taking place without a new head of government yet named.
The “resolution” approving Sviridenko’s resignation “was adopted,” the Ukrainian Parliament said on its website.
“Thank you all for your support. It was an honor to work for Ukraine,” Sviridenko wrote on social media, alongside a photo of herself in Parliament making a heart with her hands.
In another post she defended her record, highlighting the handling of the energy crisis during the past winter—despite infrastructure damage from Russian bombings—and pointing to progress on economic matters.
A tenure marked by ties with Washington
Appointed in July 2025, Sviridenko maintained close relations with U.S. officials. She negotiated a minerals investment agreement with Washington following President Donald Trump’s confrontation with Zelensky in the Oval Office.
The government reshuffle comes at a critical point in the war with Russia, now in its fifth year, with Moscow intensifying ballistic missile attacks and Kyiv planning to produce U.S.-designed Patriot air defense systems.
Zelensky on Sunday thanked Sviridenko for her work, saying he had offered her “to lead a new and important area of relations with a key partner,” without providing further details.
The prime minister’s post typically does not include authority over military strategy or frontline operations, areas in which the president and military commanders make decisions.
Possible candidates to succeed her
According to various Ukrainian media outlets, the leading candidates to head the next government are former prime minister and current energy minister Denys Shmyhal, Digital Transformation Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov, and the head of state oil and gas company Naftogaz, Sergii Koretskyi.
