Wall Street rises after better-than-expected U.S. inflation data

U.S. stocks were higher on Wednesday morning after a better-than-expected inflation reading eased fears of further Federal Reserve rate hikes. The producer price index fell 0.3% month-on-month in June, the first contraction since August 2025, reflecting lower energy prices during the period.

However, oil has resumed its recent climb amid growing U.S.–Iran tensions that have undermined the fragile calm. About 15 minutes before the open, the Dow Jones was up 0.1% at 52,550.46, the S&P 500 rose 0.4% to 7,573.84 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.5% to 26,237.93.

The producer price index release came a day after the consumer price index also showed lower-than-expected inflation on Tuesday.

Iran’s foreign minister attended the funeral of Qatar’s former emir in Doha

Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, traveled to Doha to attend the funeral of Qatar’s former emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the Iranian agency ISNA reported.

The minister’s visit to Qatar comes after Iran repeatedly struck what it described as U.S. targets in that country — the most recent attack occurred on Sunday, the day the former emir’s death was announced.

Indian seafarers suffer highest casualty toll in Gulf maritime crisis

At least 13 Indian nationals have died and three remain missing in attacks on commercial vessels in the Gulf since the war began in February, government sources told EFE — the highest number among identified nationalities so far. The most recent case was confirmed Tuesday by India’s Ministry of External Affairs, which reported the death of one seafarer and ten injured after an attack on the tankers MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, an attack the United Arab Emirates attributed to Iranian cruise missiles.

The two ships carried 30 Indian seafarers between them, out of a total crew of 46. While there have also been Filipino, Thai and Indonesian victims among attacked crews in the area, no other nationality matches the Indian toll. India is also the world’s second-largest supplier of certified seafarers, with about 300,000 active workers, according to the 2026 Seafarer Workforce Report.

The string of casualties — which includes the deaths of three Indian crew on the MT Settebello in a U.S. strike in June and the disappearance of a sailor after the attack on the GFS Galaxy — prompted the Indian government to launch a special operation to locate and assist every Indian seafarer sailing in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman.

European stocks fall as oil prices rise

Iran executed a man arrested during January protests

The Iranian regime executed on Wednesday a man accused of setting fire to government and police facilities during antigovernment protests in January in Isfahan province, Mizan News — a media outlet linked to the judiciary — reported.

The report said Mohammad Amini Dehaghani was hanged after the Supreme Court upheld the sentence. Judicial authorities allege that on January 9 he threw Molotov cocktails at the governor’s office in Dehaghan and the central police station, and incited others to attack officers.

Official reports cite surveillance footage and the accused’s confessions. They also claim Amini Dehaghani attempted to use a rifle taken from police during the protests.

Oil rises again amid Middle East military escalation

U.S. benchmark crude (WTI) rose $0.86 to $80.20 a barrel, while Brent, the international benchmark, advanced $1.15 to $85.88 a barrel.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Wednesday an agreement with Ukraine to purchase drones, aimed at boosting joint production of this battlefield-critical technology.

“This agreement will combine Ukrainian ingenuity with European industrial scale,” von der Leyen said in Kyiv after receiving an award from President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Ukraine has already signed similar deals with several EU countries and some Gulf states, seeking to leverage the expertise it has developed during more than four years of war with Russia.

These agreements are tailored to each partner, but typically involve Kyiv providing drone designs in exchange for royalties, investments and other military equipment.

“In Europe we already have vast technological and industrial capacity that can be deployed, and we have secure production sites that can help expand output,” von der Leyen said.

“But we lack the combat-proven knowledge and experience that Ukraine has built,” she added.

We can cooperate on joint production, ensure that all system components work together effectively, and provide both defense industrial bases with the boost needed to scale up investment and output decisively.

The EU is stepping up efforts to strengthen its drone capabilities following a series of incursions in countries along its eastern border, neighbors to Ukraine and Russia.

“The knowledge they have gained about how drone and anti-drone systems operate is truly unique,” von der Leyen told Zelensky in her remarks.

“We must harness it together, because we understand the threats Europe faces in this area.”

Von der Leyen did not provide details on any additional funding—if any—that was included in the agreement.

Europe is Ukraine’s main supporter in the war against Russia and recently began releasing a €90 billion loan (about $103 billion) to help Kyiv arm its forces and cover budget shortfalls.

An initial tranche of €6 billion from that loan will be used to boost drone production in Ukraine.

Drones dominate the battlefield in Ukraine, inflicting heavy losses on attacking Russian forces.

Kiev has also refined its ability to shoot down Russian attack drones targeting cities across the country.

In a speech, Zelensky said Ukraine currently produces 10 million drones a year and aims to double that output.

“We will achieve this together with our partners, once again demonstrating the success of Ukraine’s defense industry, our partners and Europe,” he added.

Iran’s authorities executed a man on Wednesday who was accused of setting fire to government and police buildings during antigovernment demonstrations in January in Isfahan province, state-backed judicial outlet Mizan News reported.

The report identified the executed man as Mohammad Amini Dehaghani and said he was hanged after Iran’s Supreme Court upheld the sentence. El producto interior bruto (PIB) de China aumentó un 4,3% interanual en el segundo trimestre de 2026, por debajo del 5% registrado en el trimestre anterior y también por debajo de la previsión mayoritaria de alrededor del 4,5%. Frente al trimestre previo, la economía creció un 0,9%, la tasa intertrimestral más baja desde finales de 2022.

El resultado genera inquietud porque corresponde a la segunda economía mundial, queda por debajo de las expectativas y podría dificultar el cumplimiento de la meta oficial de crecimiento —situada entre el 4,5% y el 5%—. Además, reaviva dudas sobre la solidez de la recuperación en un contexto de demanda interna débil, problemas persistentes en el sector inmobiliario y menor confianza en el sector privado.

Comparado con el primer trimestre, cuando el PIB creció un 1,3% respecto al periodo anterior, la tasa trimestral se redujo en 0,4 puntos. La cifra del 0,9% coincidió con la previsión más extendida entre los analistas.

El contraste más notable apareció en la comparación interanual: el 4,3% queda por debajo de la cifra previa y de las expectativas, y representa el nivel más bajo desde finales de 2022, cuando la economía todavía sufría las secuelas de la política de covid cero.

Cómo encaja la desaceleración en la meta oficial

El Gobierno fijó para 2026 un objetivo de crecimiento situado entre el 4,5% y el 5%, la meta más baja desde 1991. A pesar del enfriamiento observado en el segundo trimestre, el crecimiento acumulado en el primer semestre se mantuvo en el 4,7% interanual.

Al término de junio, el tamaño de la economía china alcanzó 69,57 billones de yuanes, equivalentes a unos 10,28 billones de dólares y 8,99 billones de euros, según las estimaciones preliminares de la Oficina Nacional de Estadística.

Por ramas de actividad, el sector primario creció un 3,7% entre enero y junio, el secundario un 3,9% y el terciario un 5,2%.

Las señales de debilidad detrás del dato

La Oficina Nacional de Estadística afirmó que la economía “operó dentro de un rango apropiado ante la presión” y que “siguió demostrando una gran resistencia”, citando el aumento de la producción, la estabilidad del mercado laboral, la ausencia de presiones inflacionarias fuertes y cierta inercia positiva en el comercio exterior.

No obstante, la institución advirtió que el entorno exterior se está volviendo más inestable e incierto, y señaló la persistencia de desequilibrios entre una oferta relativamente sólida y una demanda débil. La oficina destacó que los fundamentos de la recuperación aún deben consolidarse.

Sarah Tan, economista de Moody’s Analytics, señaló que la demanda interna sigue “todavía apagada”, afectada por la prolongada crisis inmobiliaria y por la persistente debilidad de la confianza en el sector privado. En contraste, la demanda externa se mantiene relativamente resistente pese a las tensiones geopolíticas y comerciales.

Tan resumió el problema central: la demanda nacional sigue siendo el eslabón más débil. Según ella, las medidas recientes del Gobierno para incentivar el gasto de los hogares muestran una sensación de urgencia, pero tardarán en traducirse en un aumento sostenido del consumo.

La lectura de los analistas sobre las cifras oficiales

Julian Evans-Pritchard, analista de Capital Economics, fue contundente al describir los datos: fuera de los periodos de confinamiento por la covid-19, se trata del peor conjunto de cifras trimestrales de crecimiento registradas en China.

Evans-Pritchard interpretó el resultado no tanto como un empeoramiento súbito de la economía, sino como una mayor disposición de las autoridades a reconocer debilidades preexistentes. A su juicio, los indicadores publicados y la propia meta oficial dan margen para admitir la situación real y para reducir la tendencia de algunas autoridades regionales a presentar datos exageradamente optimistas.

Tras este análisis, Capital Economics recortó su previsión de crecimiento oficial para China en 2026 al 4,6%. En su estimación alternativa, la consultora sitúa el avance en torno al 3,4%.

Irán ejecutó a un hombre detenido durante las protestas de enero

Iran executed a man arrested during January protests

Iran’s regime executed on Wednesday a man accused of setting fire to government and police facilities during anti-government protests in January in Isfahan province, according to Mizan News, a media outlet linked to the judiciary.

The report says Mohammad Amini Dehaghani was hanged after the Supreme Court upheld the sentence. Judicial authorities claim that on January 9 he threw Molotov cocktails at the governor’s office in Dehaghan and at the central police station, and incited others to attack officers.

Según Bennett, a Foreman le dijeron que iba a ver a su abogado, pero en su lugar fue conducido ante el magistrado donde le notificaron la pena adicional.

La familia afirma que la nueva sentencia se impuso por un contacto con la prensa, de modo que la pena total de Craig pasó de diez a doce años.

Familia denuncia falta de asistencia legal y de traducción

El portavoz añadió que Craig no tuvo acceso a un abogado ni a un intérprete y que no se le permitió presentar una defensa durante el proceso.

Craig y Lindsay Foreman niegan los cargos de espionaje que motivaron la condena de diez años. Fueron detenidos mientras atravesaban Irán en motocicleta durante su viaje alrededor del mundo.

El mes pasado la pareja perdió la apelación contra la sentencia.

Según la familia, ninguno pudo acudir a la audiencia ni se les explicó el rechazo del recurso; además, se les pidió firmar documentos en persa que no entendían. “No se les permitió asistir a su propia audiencia de apelación”, declaró Joe Bennett.

La abogada Haydee Dijkstal, que forma parte del equipo legal en el Reino Unido, calificó a los Foreman como “turistas inocentes detenidos arbitrariamente” y aseguró que sus derechos fundamentales han sido vulnerados de forma grave y sistemática durante la detención. El caso fue remitido al Tribunal Supremo de Irán, aunque la familia desconoce los plazos y si habrá representación legal efectiva. El Poder Judicial iraní no respondió a las solicitudes de comentarios.

Las comunicaciones de la pareja con el exterior se cortaron hace más de un mes, tras una entrevista que concedieron a la BBC. Desde entonces ambos iniciaron una huelga de hambre en protesta. El último contacto consular registrado fue en diciembre.

Craig, carpintero de profesión, lleva 25 días en huelga de hambre y solo consume azúcar, leche y agua; su familia advierte un cuadro de debilidad progresiva. Lindsay, coach de vida, retomó la huelga tras una breve pausa y acumula 16 días sin comer.

La familia recibe noticias sobre su estado únicamente a través de los compañeros de celda. “Es otra razón por la que estos dos ciudadanos británicos, sin otras opciones, recurren a la huelga de hambre”, dijo Bennett, quien reconoció tener menos información sobre la situación de su madre que sobre la de su padrastro.

El Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores del Reino Unido calificó el encarcelamiento como “injustificado y atroz” y expresó su decepción por el resultado de la apelación. Indicó que el embajador en Teherán los visitó en prisión y que se han facilitado llamadas con la familia durante el último año.

A principios de año la familia aseguró que la pareja podría estar siendo usada como “escudos humanos” en el contexto del conflicto regional. El gobierno británico advierte desde hace tiempo que tener pasaporte británico o vínculos con el país puede aumentar el riesgo de detención por parte de las autoridades iraníes.

Irán tiene un historial de detenciones de ciudadanos occidentales por motivos de seguridad. Diversos gobiernos y organizaciones de derechos humanos acusan a Teherán de emplear a estos detenidos como herramientas de negociación diplomática; el gobierno iraní rechaza esa acusación.
