Since the 1st of July, the stores have the obligation to shut down their business signs between 1 hour and 6 o’clock in the morning.

The objective, set out in the law Grenelle 1, 2009, is to limit the dangers and disorders to people, wildlife and ecosystems, and the waste of energy. The extinction does not concern the emergency lights, such as pharmacies and 11 million of lighting to the public.

This measure would represent energy savings of roughly 800 GWh a year for the signs and more than 200 GWh for the commercials, or the equivalent of the annual electricity consumption (excluding heating and hot water) of more than 370,000 households.
