It was with great emotion and sadness that I learned of Kofi Annan's disappearance that night.
Nobel Peace Prize winner in 2001, a prominent figure in Ghana, he had played the United Nations Organization as Secretary-General with force and vision for almost a decade, from 1997 to 2006.
An indefatigable and ardent supporter of dialogue, peace and multilateralism, he has continued in recent years to fight for justice, peace and development in every corner of the globe, through his activities in the world organization. Against Torture, among the Committee of Sages created by Nelson Mandela, for UN missions in Burma, Syria or Ethiopia. Very committed to the Alliance for the Green Revolution in Africa, he had created his own foundation in 2007 to continue his longstanding struggles.
I had the chance to meet him several times. I will never forget, behind his courtesy and the quiet wisdom of his words, the firmness of his ideas nor the power of his conviction.
To his wife, his three children, his family, all those who loved him, all over the world, to all United Nations personnel, France conveys his saddened thoughts and fraternal homage.
