The President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, has received the 20 July 2018 the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, for a working lunch.

The two presidents were able to get back on the set of subjects of the bilateral relationship between France and Azerbaijan. The President of the Republic recalled, in particular, the visit to Baku on 27 may, the minister of Europe and foreign Affairs, Jean-Yves Le Drian at the occasion of the celebrations of the centenary of the independence of the first republic of Azerbaijan in 1918. He praised the achievements of bilateral cooperation in the field of culture and education, including the French lycée in Baku by the University and the franco-Azerbaijani.

The two presidents discussed challenges facing Azerbaijan. The President of the Republic has told President Aliyev’s how much France was attached to the respect of the european Convention of Human rights.

The President of the Republic has assured President Aliyev for his support to the prospect of a new agreement of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the european Union, which could be signed by the end of the year.

The President of the Republic has also confirmed to Mr. Aliev, that France stood ready to support Azerbaijan in its efforts to diversify its economy. The two presidents attended the presentation of three agreements between france and azerbaijan on water management, equipment aeronautical and space cooperation.

Finally, the two presidents have had an exchange on the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. France, co-chair of the Minsk Group, has a particular responsibility to bring a lasting peace in the region. The President of the Republic stressed that it would continue to work towards a negotiated solution, which is the only option to end this conflict in a sustainable and beneficial for all the peoples of the region. He welcomed the meeting, on 11 July in Brussels, the foreign ministers of armenia and azerbaijan. The President of the Republic will continue to closely monitor the situation, and France will, in consultation with the co-presidents of the Russian federation and u.s., any initiative likely to advance the settlement process.
