“(Donald) Trump is Trump. Even with friends,” a career diplomat reflected on Monday night, when it became known that the U.S. government had requested, through its diplomatic representatives, dissolve the Special Committee on Decolonization of the United Nations (UN), which since 1965 has urged the United Kingdom to sit down with Argentina to negotiate a resolution on the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands.
The Foreign Ministry made no public comment on the request, which is consistent with Trump’s low regard for the United Nations (a sentiment shared by President Javier Milei) and which argued that the committee “has ceased to fulfill its original purpose.” Yesterday, at the weekly press briefing at the Casa Rosada, spokesperson Adrián Ravier said that the U.S. position “is under review today to make a final decision,” and added that the foreign minister, Pablo Quirno, who is accompanying the President on his current tour of Spain, would “likely” address the matter. The question made Ravier uncomfortable, and he could not specify what exactly “is under review.”
