The death or disappearance of a child is a terrible situation to live. This event can mean that parents are no longer able to work and need support. In order to ensure that the families of the victims get the help they need, the Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, the Honorable Jean-Yves Duclos, announced on May 25, 2018 the new Canada Allowance. parents of young victims of crime.

The Canada Allowance for Parents of Young Victims of Crime replaces Income Support for parents of murdered and missing children and provides better support for parents facing these tragic circumstances. The new allocation is more inclusive and flexible, allowing more parents to get the help they need. Effective September 30, 2018, the following improvements will take effect:

the age limit for young victims goes from 18 to 25; the amount of the weekly allowance goes from $ 350 to $ 450; the period during which beneficiaries can receive the allowance increases from one to two years; Beneficiaries can now work half of the scheduled hours in a week, up to 20 hours per week; the requirement that parents be required to certify that their child was not a party to the crime is eliminated for children 14 and under.

This allowance provides income support to eligible parents who suffer a loss of income because they took time off work to deal with the death or disappearance of one or more of their children as a result of probable offense under the Criminal Code. Eligible parents will have two years following the incident to request weekly payments of $ 450, paid biweekly for up to 35 weeks.

These improvements are in addition to ongoing changes to service delivery and communication efforts to increase awareness of the allocation to families affected by such a tragic event. The government also intends to amend the Canada Labor Code to provide employment protection to federally regulated private sector workers while they are absent and receiving the allowance.

Requests for incidents that occurred before September 30, 2018 will be assessed based on the eligibility criteria of the previous income support, but payments will increase to $ 450 as of today. Beneficiaries will be able to work 50% of their regular hours after September 30, 2018, up to 20 hours per week.
