The receipt for the balance of any account is valid only for the sums he mentions and not for those of an appendix to which he refers. This is the solution adopted by the Court of Cassation in the February 14, 2018 judgment.

Employees were asking for money from their former employer for their retirement pay. The employer had refused based on the receipt for the balance of any account they had signed.

The judges did not accept this argument. For the Court of Cassation indeed, the receipt for balance of any account that refers to a lump sum and refers to the attached payslip for the details of the sums paid does not extinguish the debt of the employer. Employees will be able to claim other amounts later.

The balance of any account is a document drawn up by the employer making an inventory of all the sums paid to the employee upon the termination of his employment contract, whatever the reason. It is given to the employee against receipt: the receipt for balance of any account.
